Hunting Print E-mail

In an island environment that was isolated from the rest of the world for more than 80 million years NZ was free of mammal predators allowing a number of our native birds to evolve into flightless birds occupying the niches that elsewhere were filled by mammals.  When early European settlers arrived they introduced several Big Game animals and Game birds specifically for sport. In the absence of natural predators these animals flourished and today are providing great shooting for all hunting enthusiasts.

Visitors should hire professional guides as New Zealand's forests and mountains are physically demanding and the high country weather is unpredictable. Local knowledge is also essential for a successful hunt.

On arrival, you should declare imported firearms to New Zealand Customs who will refer you to the airport police for a permit. If you don’t want to travel with your gun, professional guides can provide suitable firearms and ammunition.
